The smallest Pope in the world

Welcome to Poland, homeland of Pope John Paul II and his cult. Project “The smallest Pope in the world” has been prepared for ART.eria Festival taking place in Czestochowa, the holy city for Polish Catholics, mass pilgrimage destination.

The name of the project “The smallest Pope in the world” was inspired by the apearance of 14-meters tall figure of Pope John Paul II which is presented as an atraction in the amusement park in Czestochowa. This fiugure was widely advertised on billboards as “The biggest Pope in the word – Guiness World Record (probably)”. My project consists of cretion of a 25 cm tall scupture representing John Paul II and putting it up on a small pedestal on the main street in Czestochowa, in front of the holy monastery, which is the heart of the Catholic faith in Poland.

Unformal pose in which the pope is presented is well know from a popular photo. The sculpture remind of an agreeable and unpretentious personality of John Paul II. Those qualities are rarely found in the pompous, pope related iconography in Poland, an extreme example of which is “The biggest Pope in the word – Guiness World Record (probably)”.
